When people speak fo the “social media revolution” in the years to come, they may have to be more clear on their meaning.
We’ve all seen that Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc has all made a great impact in our lives. Easing communication, connecting with old friends, keeping up with new ones, and watching silly cat videos. Still, it’s easy to say that social media has made the most impact in the Middle East. A domino effect is happening and it’s all because of this new technology – once thought silly, then a distraction, now dangerous. Egypt’s recent change in government is a testament to what happens when people connect.
We can only assume that the people of Egypt have not only enthusiastically embraced communication via Facebook, but have really taken it to a new level. CNN is reporting that one man has named his newborn daughter “Facebook,” in honor of the revolution. I have a friend who changed her name to B’Ellana after the Star Trek Voyager character, but this is something else altogether!
